Monsters, Manga and Musings

Monsters, and monster stories, are taking over Story Planet!  Our after school kids are creating amazing characters out of Fimo and fantastic stories out of their imagination. Here’s a sneak look at a couple of their great creations. Once the stories are completed, towards the end of October, we’ll share those with you too!

Next up, in November, Mondays will become Manga Mondays as we start up a new, after-school workshop that will last for 4 weeks. Eric Kim has been doing amazing work with us already, and this will be the second Manga workshop we’ll run with him. We’ve been hearing from kids, who already have an interest in drawing and Manga, that they want to dig a little deeper. Eric will help hone their skills! The workshop will start on November 5th and run for 4 Mondays for kids in grades 5 to 8. Email info(at)storyplanet(dot)ca for more info.

At Intergalactic Travel Authority we’re musing over possible new products for the holiday season! As Intergalacticus approaches, we have some exciting items that will get your imagination humming. As an early teaser, guess what this might be…

Our amazing Write On! campaign is over and we raised over $11,000! Thank you to all of our fabulous (and generous) supporters! While we didn’t reach our ambitious goal, the money raised will go a long way towards getting our after-school program up and running. In fact, it started yesterday – with 15 neighbourhood kids coming to Story Planet after school to work on homework and creative writing. They’ll be back today, and every Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30-5:30pm, for the rest of the school year.

Stay tuned for more ways to donate to Story Planet – our ability to help kids and teens become creative and effective communicators starts with you!

The Love Letter

A love letter came by Story Planet last week.

Lindsay Zier-Vogel’s The Love Lettering Project began eight years ago. Zier-Vogel has been placing love letters in different places throughout the city and letting strangers discover the surprise. Combining poetry and art, these letters display love in unexpected ways and show up in unexpected places.

We felt extremely lucky and ecstatic to have found this love letter. It’s a wonderful reminder of how a simple letter can brighten anyone’s day.  Check out  The Love Lettering Project for more stories!

Lindsey Tashlin

Our volunteer, Lindsey, helps the Intergalactic Travel Authority run like a well-oiled spaceship.

Lindsey has been helping out at the Intergalactic Travel Authority since our launch back in July. She has hands-on experience with the special brewing process of our Black Hole coffee and is an excellent Story Planet ambassador to Earthlings who want to learn more about what we do. She loves that the ITA is full of “positive energy, smart and creative people,” and every time she volunteers, she has fun!

When she’s not at the ITA, she enjoys hanging out with her two children and going camping in their 1966 fifteen-foot trailer. One day, she hopes to go camping on the Moon!

Thank you Lindsey for all your hard work! Your contributions make our mission possible!

Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Norval Morrisseau.

Welcome to our new site!

Welcome to the launch of our brand spanking new website! With this new portal we will be better able to let you know the exciting things going on at Story Planet and how you can be involved. Take a tour around this corner of our universe and let us know what you think.

We’d like to send out a blackhole size thank you to Context Creative without whom this site would never have been possible. And a special shout out to Mary at Context, who was an absolute dream to work with!

Eric Kim

As a boy, Eric Kim never imagined he would one day work as an illustrator.  But he has used his “humble beginnings” to connect with the Bloordale community through art.

Eric Kim is a supernova at Story Planet.

He has leant his considerable talents (he’s awesome at computer animation and has a Bachelor of Arts Illustration degree from Sheridan College) to Story Planet as a volunteer and artist at our workshops – everything from drawing characters at Alpha workshops to leading a seven week Manga for Girls workshop.

Eric loves that Story Planet does what he enjoys doing – making stories and giving young students a chance to create. He believes that “being comfortable with being creative is at the heart of Story Planet”. Eric will continue to work with us in any capacity because he thinks storymaking bridges gaps – inspiring kids to become engaged and involved in their community.

Eric is currently working with Manga Dojo to offer workshops to students ages 13-17. This workshop series encourages Canadian talent and spreads the message that anyone can draw comics and publish at any age. He is also working on a book titled Billy Smoke which should hit shelves in 2013.
