Connecting Through Comics

Last year Story Planet piloted a new model of program delivery: satellite!

As a program provider for Connected North, a groundbreaking initiative whose aim is to “foster student engagement and enhanced educational outcomes in remote Indigenous communities,” Story Planet worked with five classrooms in communities that lack stable internet access, nearly 2,000 kilometres away, engaging kids in writing and creating stories about their pandemic experiences.

The delivery model, a cross between a webinar and a workshop, is a big departure for Story Planet, which is all about interaction and sharing, but we worked through the challenges and have created a whole new offering for this year—ComicMaker!

We’ve designed a workshop that manages to conjure the spirit of interaction and intimacy so key to a Story Planet workshop, all in one fun, creative hour. Artists draw alongside the children in real time, teaching the basics of storyboarding and sequencing.

Connected North’s mission is so vital, and we’re honoured to play a small part in achieving it. Now bring on the ComicMaking!
