Story Planet is looking for writers to facilitate our school workshops!

Posted: September 1, 2023

Expires: September 7, 2023

Are you a writer who loves working with children? Do you want to work in equity-deserving communities to foster creativity, strengthen literacy skills, and give children a voice? If so, this is your boarding call for the Story Planet Intergalactic Express!

Who We Are

  • Story Planet is a charity devoted to amplifying the voices of children and young people in Toronto’s equity-deserving communities. Our creative writing and art programs inspire kids to imagine and write stories while building literacy, confidence, and self-worth.

  • We run 90+ free workshops a year in high-priority schools where kids face numerous barriers to success and inclusion in school and beyond. Through writing short stories, plays, comics, podcasts, and more, kids exercise their creativity and build confidence and self-worth.

What We’re Looking For

  • Facilitators must be trained as and/or actively engaged in a writing practice.

  • Facilitators must have experience teaching or leading groups, workshops, or classes for children or young people.

  • We prioritize the hiring of folks who are representative of and/or live in the communities we serve, where kids are predominantly BIPOC and are often new to Canada.

  • Facilitators should be available for one to two workshops a week, with the exception of school holidays.

    • Workshops take place during the school day, either in the morning (approximately 8:30–noon) or the afternoon (approximately noon–3:30).

    • Workshops take place in schools primarily in North York and Scarborough. Compensation takes into account travel time and costs.

  • In addition, facilitators must attend a weekly, half-day, in-person meeting and program prep session at our office at 986 Bathurst Street (day to be determined).

Terms and Details

  • We pay a flat rate per workshop that varies according to your role and the program. Compensation is competitive and takes into account preparation and travel.

  • We hope you will commit to a full school year with Story Planet (approximately two workshops per week while school is in the session).

  • The application process involves an interview, a Vulnerable Sector Police Screening, and reference checks.

  • Once on board, you’ll attend a training session and shadow a workshop or two.

How to Apply

  • Be sure to tell us all about yourself, your experience with kids, and why making stories is important to you.
